World Peace Fellowships for 2010

The District 5790 Rotary World Peace Fellowships Committee is looking for highly qualified women and men to nominate for a 2010 Rotary World Peace Fellowship.
Two opportunities:
1. The World Peace Fellowship is up to two years of study
2. The Professional Development Certificate is for three months.

The District is currently honored to have 2008-2010 Rotary World Peace Fellow Jay Gilliam from the Rotary Club of Arlington studying for his masters degree in international studies at the International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan. Jay completed the application and interview process between January and June 2007. We want to nominate highly talented stars like Jay Gilliam for a Rotary World Peace Fellowship that will underwrite up to two years of peace and conflict resolution studies leading to a master's degree.
Jack DuVall, Founding Director of the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict, was quoted in the April 2006 Rotarian as saying:
"Those for whom PEACE is no more than a DREAM are asleep to the FUTURE."

Qualifications for Rotary World Peace Fellows:
Our District is allowed to nominate all highly qualified candidates to The Rotary Foundation to be reviewed by the Rotary Centers Selection Committee.
The average age of successful candidates is about 29 years of age. In addition to being outstanding student-scholars, the minimum requirement is three years of experience.
We are told that successful American candidates have often had prior military, Peace Corps, or law enforcement experience, though these are not required.
Work in the domain of peace and conflict resolution is required.
There are six universities worldwide where Peace Fellows may apply to study: Duke-University of North Carolina (US), International Christian University (Japan), Universidad del Salvador (Argentina), University of California, Berkeley (US), University of Bradford (UK), and University of Queensland (Australia).
Timetable
Nominating Rotary Clubs should receive completed applications from their nominees by the end of February 2009.
A Rotary Club's nominating committee should interview its candidate(s) by March 2009 so that the District 5790 Committee may receive a nominating package by early April 2009.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CERTIFICATE
In addition, your District 5790 Committee is receiving applications for the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program.
This is a 3-month intensive program of study in Bangkok, Thailand at Chulalongkorn University.
The program is designed for professionals with five years' relevant work experience and with current full-time employment in mid- to upper-level positions. There are two sessions per year: January-April and June-August. The District may nominate all fully qualified candidates.
